Phil Stephenson (Baseball, 1979-82) One of the premier offensive players in college baseball, possessing the combination of power, speed and discipline as a hitter. Playing for his brother, head coach Gene Stephenson, Phil helped build the foundation for one of the powerful programs in college baseball. He hit 57 home runs in his career, but was noted for his ability to drive the ball that resulted in 91 career doubles and 25 triples. A tremendously consistent hitter, he captured the attention of college baseball by hitting in an NCAA-record 47 consecutive games in 1981. In helping lead the Shockers to a runner-up finish in the 1982 College World Series, he hit a team-leading .399 with 30 doubles and a national-best 87 stolen bases. That performance earned him both national and Missouri Conference Player of the Year Honors. He was named first-team All-America at first base in 1981 and 1982, was three times an All-MVC performer and was honored as a second-team Academic All-American in 1982. During his career he established nine Shocker offensive records, including games played, hits, runs and RBI. Inducted, 1989.
