New Rochelle, NY- On April 30, 2007, Iona College celebrated National Student-Athlete Day in recognition of outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to the community.

The evening included the presentation of the Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, an award which recognizes one male and female upperclassman for their exceptional academic achievements. Philip Burkart, a member of the Men’s Cross-Country/Track & Field team, was deemed the Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for having achieved the highest cumulative GPA (3.9) among all male student-athletes. The Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was presented to Regan Pettijohn of the Women’s Basketball team for having achieved a stellar 4.0 GPA during the course of her career.

In addition, the much anticipated Gael of the Year Award was presented to one male or female athlete on each team, who through his/her athletic accomplishments, academic achievements, community involvement, and demonstration of leadership best exemplifies what it means to be an Iona College Gael. The recipients were as follows: Ed Hackimer, Baseball; Justin Marshall, Men’s Basketball; Regan Pettijohn, Women’s Basketball; Philip Burkart, Men’s Cross-Country/Track & Field; Lauren Simeson, Women’s Cross-Country/Track & Field; Brian Watts, Football; Kyle Underwood, Golf; Lindsay Conway, Lacrosse; Tim Malet, Men’s Rowing; Melissa VanGelder, Women’s Rowing; Bryan Oelkers, Men’s Soccer; Eleri Earnshaw, Women’s Soccer; Stacy Moyer, Softball; Drew Finneran, Men’s Swimming & Diving; Audrey Emaus, Women’s Swimming & Diving; Megan Dailey, Volleyball; Nick Velasquez, Men’s Water Polo; and Alicia Keating, Women’s Water Polo.

All in all, the event was a huge success and allowed the Athletic Department to pay tribute to all student-athletes for their continued dedication, perseverance, and accomplishments over the past year.
