ILLESCAS, Spain - The University of Denver men's basketball team used a 13-3 run during the final five minutes to seal a 67-59 victory over C.B. Illescas on Friday night. The run capped a 20-6 fourth quarter for the Pioneers.
"We played very well in the second and fourth quarters," head coach Joe Scott said. "Our focus was our defense, and it was terrific during those quarters. Tonight we saw the effects of playing really good defense, because when we did that we scored pretty easily. It was a very good win. I think the fourth quarter was the best we've played this trip."
With the Pioneers trailing by two points, guard Travis Hallam (Mesquite, Texas) converted a three-point play, and guard Chase Hallam (Mesquite, Texas) pulled down a rebound and made a layup to seal the game with 49 seconds remaining.
The first half was back and forth, but 10 points by Stafford helped give Denver a 33-30 advantage at the break, opening up a slight lead after a 19-19 first quarter.
The Pioneers are now 3-2 during their trip through Spain. Denver plays its sixth and final game of the Spanish tour against Ciego de Avila on Saturday night in Avila, Spain.
