STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Football team competed in their first full scrimmage of fall camp Saturday. The Eagles will practice Sunday afternoon before returning to two-a-days on Monday.

The scrimmage followed three periods of individuals and featured nearly 30 plays for all four teams on defense and offense. The team also worked on special teams during the scrimmage, including punt and punt return and field goal and field goal block.

Head Coach Jeff Monken discussed with Eagle Vision the importance of a scrimmage and what it brings to the table. "There is a sense of urgency for them to learn their plays and to know that they are out there in a game-like environment."

Southern Conference officials were in attendance to officiate the scrimmage, and the play clock was used to create a game-like tempo. "We have to get use to playing that way with officials, tackling guys to the ground and playing blocks," said Coach Monken. "The one thing that we were trying to accomplish today was to make it as game like as we could."

Inside Georgia Southern Football with Head Coach Jeff Monken and the "Voice of the Eagles" Chris Blair returns for the 2011 season and will air each week during the season live from Locos Grill and Pub in Statesboro at 7 p.m.

Georgia Southern has 9 more practice sessions remaining before breaking fall camp and starting classes on Monday, August 22nd. The Eagles will practice at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday before opening the week of August 15th with a two-a-day on Monday.
