STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Athletics Department gathered on Tuesday night, August 23rd, for its 2011-12 Convocation at the Nessmith-Lane Ballroom. Georgia Southern University President Dr. Brooks A. Keel addressed the gathering and spoke on "Investing in a Vision of Excellence." The department also paused to remember the memory of Thomas Sharkey.
"You serve as role model for the young, future Eagles," said Keel. "Elementary, middle and high school kids look up to you, they dream about being you, and they emulate your actions."
Athletics Director Sam Baker closed the evening with a charge to the student-athlete population. "Stay focused, carry yourself well and remember. We want to win, but we want to do it the right way."
Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Chris Geyerman presented trophies to the top men's and women's teams based on academic performance during the 2010-11 year. The Volleyball team posted a 3.46 GPA to lead all Eagle squads, while the men's tennis team was the top men's team with a 3.37GPA.
The new officers for the 2011-12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee were introduced by Senior Woman Administrator Cathy Beene. President Brandavious Mann (football), Vice President Alessandra Dzuba (women's tennis), Secretary Samantha Williams (women's basketball) and Treasurer Alex Mitchell (swimming & diving) as well as representatives for each sport were recognized by Beene.
Women's Soccer continues its 2011 campaign on Thursday afternoon against Mercer starting at 4 p.m. while the GSU Volleyball team opens the SpringHill Suites Invitational on Friday morning at the Old Hanner Gym. The Eagle men's soccer team opens the season on Saturday, August 27th at North Florida. On September 3rd, the Eagle football team travels to face Samford in the 2011 season opener.
