STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Women's Soccer returns to the friendly confines of Eagle Field on Thursday, August 25th for the 2011 home opener against the Mercer Bears. Kickoff for the match is slated for 4 p.m. The match is also the first regular season home match for Head Coach Lindsey Vanderspiegel.

The Eagles opened the 2011 campaign on Friday, August 19, 2011 at Winthrop with a 3-1 defeat. Winthrop scored twice late in the first half, but GSU's Alex Murphy (Cincinnati, Ohio) cut the advantage to 2-1 before the halftime intermission. A late goal by the hosts put the match on ice, but Georgia Southern recorded 10 total shots and eight corner kicks to Winthrop's five. Goalkeeper Katie Merson (Albuquerque, N.M.) had five saves on the night for the Eagles.

The 2011 Eagles return their leading scorer from last season in senior captain Sara Oland (Evans, Ga.). She scored nine goals last season and has 13 career goals. Junior captain Courtney Collins (Mason, Ohio) had three assists in 2010 to pace the team. The captain corps is rounded out by Krystin Smith (Acworth, Ga).

The next foe for the Eagles, Mercer, is an in-state rival from nearby Macon, Ga. The Eagles lead the all-time series which dates back to 1994 by a 10-5-1 margin. Mercer has won two games on the trot, taking a 2-0 result in 2009 and winning 4-0 last season.

In their 2011 season opener, Mercer took a 2-0 win over Jacksonville State. Goals by Casey Barrett and Emerald Phillips gave the defending Atlantic Sun Conference Champions an early 1-0 record on the season.

The Eagles are scheduled for a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. this weekend for a Saturday (August 27th) match against Coastal Carolina. With Hurricane Irene approaching the Carolinas, check for any changes to the schedule.
