STATESBORO, Ga. - Following a historic season-opening victory over North Florida, Georgia Southern Men's Soccer travels northward for two games this weekend against Winthrop and Gardner-Webb in the SoCon/Big South Shootout. The Eagles open the weekend against the Winthrop Eagles on Thursday night, September 1st, at 7 p.m. and closes the weekend with a neutral site game against Gardner-Webb on Saturday, September 3rd, at 4:30 p.m.

Georgia Southern opened the season by rolling to a 5-0 win over North Florida on Saturday night, August 27th, to move to 1-0 on the season. Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) scored the first two goals of the season for the Eagles and added an assist later in the match. Redshirt sophomore Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.) matched the feat with two goals and an assist in the Eagles' first 5-0 victory since 1998. The pair finished one goal shy of the first hat trick for an Eagle since 1999.

Thursday's game against Winthrop is the 17th all-time between the pair of Eagles. Georgia Southern trails 6-8-2 in the all-time series, but scored a 4-0 win over Winthrop last season. On Saturday, Georgia Southern faces Gardner-Webb for the sixth time. GSU trails 2-3-0 all-time and defeated the Bulldogs in 2006 (4-3) and 2008 (4-1).

Winthrop got off to a winning start to the season with a 2-0 win over Brevard on Friday, August 26th. Gardner-Webb opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Brevard on Sunday, August 28th.

Following the pair of games, Georgia Southern travels to the Belmont Tournament for games against Belmont and Lipscomb on Friday, September 9th, and Sunday, September 11th.
