Cathy Hummel enters her 15th season at the helm of the Canisius College volleyball team and is the program’s winningest coach with 182 career victories. Hummel, the longest-tenured coach in the conference, has led Canisius to the semifinals of the MAAC Championship three times in the last six seasons and five times overall. The program has also earned an NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition award six times since 2006, the most of any volleyball program in the MAAC.

Hummel was named the 10th head coach in program history March 29, 2001, after serving as an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo. Her coaching career began in 1995 as assistant coach at Division II Dowling College in Oakdale, N.Y. After consecutive NCAA appearances in 1995 and 1996 with the Golden Lions, she joined the Buffalo staff in 1997 and aided in the Bulls’ progression into the Mid-American Conference.
A 1991 graduate of Hofstra University, Hummel was named Most Valuable Player at the ECAC Championships in 1988 and 1990. Prior to playing at Hofstra, Hummel attended James Madison University for two seasons and was named the Colonial Athletic Conference MVP in 1987. She was selected to the Wall of Fame at James Madison University in 2000.
Hummel served as a head coach for the Cheetah Volleyball program from 1995-2003. She won two gold medals at the 2003 Empire State Games in Buffalo, one as a coach and one as a participant. Hummel coached the Western scholastic team to a top finish, then went on to help the Western open squad bring home the tournament’s title as a player. She also accomplished this feat at the 2001 Empire State Games as well.
Cathy is married to Todd Hummel, the head coach of the Canisius College golf team. They reside in North Tonawanda with their son Jaxon and daughter Jordan.
