CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
Canisius College athletics dates back to the early 1900’s when baseball, and then men’s basketball, were the only two sports sponsored by the College. Canisius received its unique nickname in the early 1930s when professor Charles Brady, whose son Erik currently writes for USA Today, began calling Canisius the Golden Griffins. Canisius athletics was primarily known for its men’s basketball program in the early days, however sports such as softball, women’s basketball, synchronized swimming, baseball and lacrosse have recently made their mark.
Over the past 20 years, Canisius has captured 21 regular season Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and claimed 14 MAAC tournament titles. Golden Griffins have been named Academic All-Americans 24 times, while another six have received NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships. Since 2000-01, 59 student-athletes have claimed first-team all-conference honors, 47 have received second-team all-conference honors, 14 have earned all-rookie honors and 40 have received all-tournament honors. In the past eight years, Canisius has won 10 Player of the Year awards, nine Rookie of the Year awards, seven Defensive Player of the Year awards, six MAAC Tournament MVP awards and four Coach of the Year awards.
Home for Canisius basketball and volleyball is the Koessler Athletic Center. The recently renovated facility seats 2,176 fans and presents tremendous advertising opportunities and exposures for our corporate partners. Equally impressive is the Demske Sports Complex, the outdoor home for softball, baseball, lacrosse and soccer. The field underwent a $1.7 million renovation during the summer of 2008 that saw a state of the art playing surface added as well as new scoreboards and dugouts for the baseball team. The facility, which is used almost year-round, also presents great opportunities for partners to display their advertising message to the multitude of fans and participants that use the facility to either watch games or participate on the artificial surface.
