Adjacent to Kidd Brewer Stadium and the new ASU Softball Stadium, the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility features an 80x60-yard FieldTurf surface which allows all 20 Mountaineer varsity teams to train and condition away from the High Country elements.
The Sofield Facility officially opened in October 2007. It was third new facility to open as part of Appalachian athletics’ $32 million facilities enhancement campaign. Both the Sywassink/Lloyd Family Softball Stadium, which shares the site formerly occupied by Red Lackey Field with the Sofield Facility, and Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium, the new state-of-the-art home of Mountaineer baseball, opened in the spring of 2007. The crown jewel of the facilities enhancement campaign, the 120,000-sqaure-foot Appalachian Athletics Center, opened in 2009.
