A three-time All-North Central Conference performer on the basketball court, he led NDSU in scoring as a junior with an average of 18 points per game, was second in league scoring (12.9 ppg) in ’47 and again in ’48 (17 ppg). He earned all-league honors in 1943.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, the 6-foot-4 Brostrom returned to earn All-NCC honors in both 1947 and 1948. He was the captain of the 1947 Bison team and earned All-Midwest honors in 1948.

He coached and taught at New Rockford and Mandan in North Dakota where his teams won 68 percent of their games. He moved to Vista, Calif., where he was a teacher and coach, assistant principal and assistant superintendent for the Vista Unified School District. He was the Educator of the Year in that program and earned a Freedom Foundation Heritage Award from Valley Forge, Pa.
