An outstanding football player for North Dakota State, Cichy collected an abundance of deserved fame for his prowess as a dedicated and successful football coach at Fargo Shanley High School. Earned first-team All-North Central Conference honors at tackle in 1947. The legendary prep football coach rolled up a won-lost record of 231-38-3, an unmatched 16 state championships and four mythical state titles. Cichy retired from coaching after the 1977 season with the Deacons holding a 32-game winning streak and six straight Class A titles. Recipient of numerous Coach of the Year honors. He was inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame in Milwaukee in December of 1984. Three Cichy young men have played football for the Bison -- Mike, Joe (an All-America safety) and Nick (an All-North Central Conference defensive back). Joe and Nick are also members of the Hall of Fame.
