An outstanding defensive back for the Bison in the late 1960s and 1970, Cichy was a two-time first team Little All-American for the Bison, earning the honor in 1969 from the Kodak American Football Coaches Association and again in 1970 from the Associated Press. He was captain of the 1970 NDSU team that finished with a 9-0-1 record and a Camellia Bowl championship win over Montana. His 53 unassisted tackles in 1969 stood alone as a school single-season record for 34 years before being tied. Along with his father, Sid, he is only one of two father-son combinations in the Bison Hall of Fame’s history. Joe was inducted into the National College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
