One of the top quarterbacks in Bison history, Bentson was a two-year starter for NDSU in 1970 and 1971 when the Bison compiled a 16-2-1 record, including a second-place national finish in 1970. He set several school records during his career and still owns the marks for most touchdown passes thrown in one season (14 in 1970) and most yards of total offense in one game (373 vs. Northern Arizona in 1971). Backup QB on the 1969 national championship team, he earned All-NCC honors in 1970 and 1971. Also named honorable mention All-America both those years, he led the Bison to a 31-16 win over Montana in the 1970 Camellia Bowl by scoring 3 TDs and gaining 208 yards. His father, B.C. "Chuck" Bentson, was a men's basketball coach at NDSU and is a Bison Hall of Famer.
