An All-North Central Conference and honorable mention All-America selection in 1978 as a senior, McTague set numerous scoring, receiving, and kicking records for both North Dakota State University and the NCC. He was NDSU's most valuable player in 1978 and led the team in both scoring and receiving in 1977 and 1978. McTague was the first player taken in the 1979 Canadian Football League draft by the Calgary Stampeders and was a candidate for Rookie of the Year. He set seven punting records for the Stampeders. He was traded to the Montreal Alouettes in 1985 where he was a candidate for the league’s outstanding player award after being named to the Eastern Conference All-Pro team as a flanker.
