Tim Carrier’s seventh inning solo shot ignited a seven-run UNC Greensboro rally as the Spartans (33-26) posted an 12-9 victory over Georgia Southern (33-25) in the quarterfinals of the Bennett Hofford Southern Conference Championship. Carrier’s home run over the leftfield fence broke a 5-5 tie and boosted the Spartans to the win.

 

Georgia Southern scored three runs in the top if the first inning when Southern Conference Player of the Year Chris Shehan drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Jeremiah Parker singled Shehan home with the third run of the inning.

 

The Spartans rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Adam Deleo singled and Sean Snell walked. Deleo was thrown out at the plate on Matt Gaski’s single. With two outs, Greg Feltes singled to left field driving in two runs.

 

UNC Greensboro added three more runs in the fourth inning when Deleo homered and Gaski drove in two runs with a single through the right side.

 

Georgia Southern scored a run in the seventh inning on Ty Wright’s home run to left field to tie the score at 5-5. But the Spartans put the game away with a seven-run seventh inning. Following Carrier’s home run, Corey Overholtzer singled, Deleo walked and Ray Quinones singled to load the bases. Gaski’s single to right center scored two runs. After Orton walked, Feltes blasted a grand slam to give the Spartans as 12-5 lead.

 

Georgia Southern added two runs on two hits in the eighth inning to make it 12-7 when Wright brought home one run with s single and David Richardson reached on a fielder’s choice up the middle, driving home a run. The Eagles scored two more runs in the ninth inning to close the gap to 12-9.

 

Relief pitcher Greg Smith (5-1) picked up the win for the Spartans, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing four hits and three runs. Aaron Eubanks (6-2)pitched 3.0 innings in relief and suffered the loss.

 

Gaski was 3-for-4 with four RBI and Feltes had six RBI to pace the Spartans. Wright had three hits to lead the Eagles.

 

UNC Greensboro will take on No. 1 seed Elon on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. With the loss, Georgia Southern was eliminated from the tournament.
