Release: June 29, 2005

Named for the dominant 1938 Duke Football Team, the Iron Dukes organization has been providing invaluable financial support to student-athletes as the fundraising arm of Duke Athletics since 1970.

Currently, the Iron Dukes face the challenge of funding all 255 athletic scholarships available to Duke student-athletes as only a small fraction of them are fully endowed.  Last year, athletic scholarship endowment resources provided enough income to fund only 44 scholarships with the remaining being generously provided by the Iron Dukes.  Due to the high cost of educating a Duke student, stronger annual support is critical for the university to continue to offer competitive scholarship opportunities.  Of Duke Athletics’ $75 million endowment, only $61 million is allocated for scholarship costs.  Although we continue to raise money to endow scholarships that will sustain our future, annual support is increasingly important to ensure the immediate success of Duke Athletics.

We can continue to honor our proud winning tradition of the past as we build great Blue Devil teams for the future, but we need you on our team.  Help us strengthen the heart of one of the premiere academic and athletic institutions in the country.  Your generosity will afford outstanding young student-athletes the opportunity to pursue a Duke education while competing at the highest level.

In accordance with the Duke University calendar, our fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year.  Contributions to the Iron Dukes are contributable to the fiscal year in which they are made.  Our annual mailing is sent out in mid-June to allow current contributors to make their pledge and/or contribution for the upcoming fiscal year.  While a pledge and contribution are not due until June 30 of the following year, to be eligible for Iron Dukes benefits (i.e. football and basketball season ticket priority, parking privileges, post-season ticket priority, etc.) for the current fiscal year, a pledge and/or contribution must be made before individually set deadlines.

If you would like to become a new contributor, you can do so by mail or by clicking here to visit our online giving site. To mail in your pledge card, please print off and fill out one of the pledge cards found below then please return it to the Iron Dukes office at the address below.  If you have any questions about the Iron Dukes, please contact our office at (919) 613-7575 or IronDukes@duaa.duke.edu for more information.
