VI. LOCAL MERCHANTS
A. Letter to Local Merchants
A. LETTER TO LOCAL MERCHANTS
Dear Local Merchants,
Thank you for your support of our athletics program. Your business is vital to our success.
In recent years, the NCAA has investigated several intercollegiate athletic programs across the country due to allegations that local establishments were providing “extra benefits” to currently enrolled student-athletes. As this has proven to be an ongoing problem for the NCAA, we believe it is important to inform all local businesses near our campus of the consequences that could result from providing benefits to student-athletes and/or their families.
If our student-athletes, or their families or friends, patronize your establishment, we ask that you accommodate them as you would any other customer. The NCAA prohibits businesses from providing anything free or at a reduced cost to student-athletes that is no available to the general public and/or student body. Consequently, providing any free or reduced cost items or services to Columbia University student-athletes would violate NCAA rules. Moreover, if a student-athlete or a student-athlete’s friend or relative receives anything free of cost or at a reduced rate that is not generally available to the public, the student-athlete’s eligibility for intercollegiate athletics competition will be jeopardized.
This letter is part of our overall educational program. Thank you for joining in our efforts to protect the eligibility and welfare of our student-athletes as well as the integrity of Columbia University. If you have any questions, now or in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact the Compliance Office at (212) 854-8666. We appreciate your attention to this matter.
Roar, Lion, Roar!
