There has been a lot of discussion regarding the NCAA attendance requirement and the coming football season. The NCAA states that once every two years on a rolling basis, an institution shall average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football games. We have elected to average 15,000 in paid attendance! Because we must meet this requirement once every two years, we have chosen the year we play Boise State at home. For purposes of computing paid attendance, tickets must be sold for at least one-third of the highest regular established ticket price as established prior to the season, regardless of whether they are used for admission. Tickets sold at less than one-third of the highest regular established price may be counted as paid attendance only if they are used for admission. Student attendance may be only counted as paid attendance if the student actually attends the game.

As you can tell it is very important for our program that we sell as many tickets as possible for this season. For convenience, we provided additional options for fans to purchase tickets with our two- and three- pack offerings. As discussed before, we want to maximize having Boise State at home and thus the decision to encourage packaging the Boise State ticket with another game.

Attendance is only one of the requirements to be classified in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The others are described below:

The institution shall sponsor a minimum of 16 varsity intercollegiate sports, including football.

The institution shall schedule and play five regular-season home games against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents.  Each year a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent may be substituted to satisfy the scheduling requirement provided the FCS institution has averaged 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of grant-in-aid per year in football over a rolling two-year period.  An institution may use one home contest against an FBS member conducted at a neutral site to satisfy the home-game requirement.

Annually offer a minimum of 200 athletics grants-in-aid or expend at least $4 million on grants-in-aid to student-athlete programs.

On another topic, I have been chosen as a member of the search committee that will choose our next president. This is a tremendous assignment and one to which I look forward to serving.  I am equally excited about the other search committee members and look forward to working with them and finding the best President for the University of Idaho.
