Dick Tressel is in his seventh year as the Buckeyes’ running backs coach and his tenth season at Ohio State. Tressel, the older brother of Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel, joined the football staff in 2001 as associate director of football operations. The head football coach at Hamline University in Minnesota for 23 years before coming to Ohio State, Tressel returned to on-the-field coaching in 2004, taking over the Buckeye running backs.

At Hamline, where he also served as director of athletics for 21 years, Tressel was 124-102-2, directing the Pipers to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in 1984 and 1988. In 1984, he was honored as Division III coach of the year.

Tressel was born in Columbus and grew up in Berea, Ohio, where his father was head coach at Baldwin-Wallace College. He played both football and baseball at B-W, earning four letters in each sport. A three-year starter at defensive back, he still holds the school record in baseball for playing the entire season without a fielding error at second base.

Tressel graduated from Baldwin Wallace in 1970 with a degree in physical education. He received his master’s from Florida State in 1976 and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1996. He is a member of the Minnesota High School Football Coaches, Berea High School and Hamline University halls of fame.

Dick and his wife, Connie, an accomplished photojournalist, have three sons: Mike, Ben and Luke. Ben and Luke played football for their father at Hamline; Mike played at Cornell College in Iowa and is now an assistant at Michigan State under former Buckeye defensive coordinator Mark Dantonio. Ben and Luke teach physical education and coach in Minnesota. Daughters-in-law Megan, Allyson and Rachel and grandchildren Logan, Quincy, Zoe, Jack and Mahlia round out the Tressel family.
