A four-year letterwinner in both cross country and track at NDSU and the NCC champion in the 1964 league cross country meet, Grooters' biggest impact may have been as the head coach of both those sports. He guided NDSU to six NCC championships and one national title in seven seasons (1968-1974). His 1971 cross country team won the NCC title and finished second in the NCAA national meet, while his 1972 cross country team finished second in the league but rebounded to win the national crown. NDSU won NCC titles in both indoor and outdoor track in 1971 and 1972. He coached Mike Slack to NCAA individual titles in both 1971 and 1972 in cross country while guiding 10 athletes to All-America status. Eight other athletes captured All-America honors in outdoor track under Grooters.
