A two-time All-American in cross country for North Dakota State, Lussenden went on to international competition as a member of the 1975 U.S. team in the Pan American games in Mexico City. An All-American in cross country in 1970 and 1971, his best national finish was seventh on the 1971 team that finished second in the NCAA championships. He won two NCC individual outdoor titles and one league indoor crown. He set school outdoor records in the retired 2-mile run and 2-mile relay (set at the Texas Relays). Lussenden won the United States Track and Field Federation 3,000-meter steeplechase title in 1974 with a record time of 8:38.2. At the Pan American trials in 1975, he recorded a time of 8:27.85 in the event, and went on to finish fifth at the Pan American games.
