Nystrom was one of the most influential and dynamic personalities in the history of Bison football. Although his tenure at NDSU was just four years, he was a major cog in the Bison football resurrection that saw North Dakota State claim its first national football crown in 1965. He was the offensive line coach for the Bison under Darrell Mudra and Ron Erhardt. His stop at NDSU was just a small step in an outstanding coaching career. He was part of national championship teams at NDSU (1965), Oklahoma (1968) and Northern Michigan (1976). An All-American for Michigan State, Nystrom played in and won two Rose Bowls (1954 and 1956), and coached in 12 bowl games including the 1962 and 1968 Orange Bowls, the 1969 Blue Bonnet Bowl, the 1984 Cherry Bowl, and the 1985 All-American Bowl.
