One of the outstanding golfers in the Upper Midwest in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Vennerstrom captured the North Central Conference individual championship in 1960 and led the Bison to NCC team titles in 1961 and 1962. He graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in both math and business. He worked for Western States Life until his death in 1978, achieving the position of Vice President of Systems and Operations. His golfing career outside the realm of NDSU is legendary. He was the North Dakota State Men's Amateur champion three times (1960, 1970, 1971), he earned a berth in the 1970 United States Men's Amateur Golf Championships, and he was inducted into the North Dakota Golfers' Hall of Fame in 1981. A native of Chicago, a golf scholarship was established at NDSU in 1979 in his memory.
