Palivec guided North Dakota State to two North Central Conference volleyball championships and five trips to the NCAA Division II national playoffs including a final four appearance in 1986. Her record in nine years as the coach of the Herd was a sparkling 324-138. She coached or recruited eight All-Americans at NDSU including U.S. Olympian Janet Cobbs. Palivec was twice named NCC Coach of the Year.

In addition, she coached softball at NDSU and compiled a record of 30-40 in three seasons.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Palivec was the head volleyball coach at Montana State University from 1987-91. Her resume also included administrative positions with USA Volleyball and the American Volleyball Coaches Association, and becoming head volleyball coach at Bemidji (Minn.) State in 1994.

She received her bachelor's degree in physical education from Indiana University in 1974 and a master's degree from Ball State University in 1978.
