The North Dakota State football team's Most Valuable Player award is named after 1946 all-conference halfback Dennis Drews. Drews was the captain of both the 1947 and 1948 Bison teams and served as an assistant coach for the Bison freshman team. He served in the Armed Forces in both World War II and the Korean War, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Korean Service Medal.  He was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Service in the Korean War in March 1953. He was killed in a training flight in an F84F Thunderstreak at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine, in July 1954.
