A standout trackster for NDSU in 1965, 1966 and 1967, MacLaren set the North Central Conference record in the 880-yard run. He was a member of the Bison mile relay team that established NDSU indoor and outdoor records. In NCC outdoor competition, he won the 440-yard dash in 1965 and 1966, the 880-yard run in 1966 and 1967, and the mile in 1967. In NCC indoor meets, he was a two-time champion in the 600-yard run and the 880-yard run in 1966 and 1967. In 1966, he was All-America with a third-place finish in the NCAA College Division 880-yard run. He was a member of the Canadian track team in both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.
