Mjos garnered numerous honors in both football and baseball at NDSU. In 1969, the North Dakota Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association named him College Athlete of the Year, the first non-North Dakotan to be so recognized. In football, as a member of the 1968 and 1969 national championship teams, Mjos was an All-NCC running back for two years, was named the most valuable back in the conference in 1969 and gained honorable mention on the 1969 Associated Press All-America team. In baseball, Mjos was a member of the 1969 conference champion baseball team. He was second nationally with nine home runs, and he earned a spot on the All-NCC team. Began his medical career as a resident in orthopedic surgery at the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Hospital.
