A bruising runner for the Bison in 1965, 1966 and 1967, Rota was named to the All-North Central Conference team all three years. He was chosen to the Associated Press College Division All-America team for three consecutive years -- second team in 1965 and honorable mention in 1966 and 1967. In 1965, Rota was honored as the Most Valuable Offensive Player in the Pecan Bowl, where NDSU defeated Grambling College, 20-7. In 1967, he received the Dennis Drews Award as the most valuable player on the Bison squad.
