One of the great names in the history of North Central Conference and North Dakota State track history, Wirtz captured a total of 12 individual NCC indoor or outdoor championships over a two-year period. He capped off that incredible run in 1971 by winning four indoor crowns and three outdoor titles as the Bison swept the indoor and outdoor NCC championships. For his efforts, Wirtz was named the MVP in both meets. He held five NCC records when he finished and seven school records in a modern track performance never equalled in the history of the NCC. Earned two NCAA College Division All-America awards with a 1969 fourth-place finish in the 120-yard high hurdles and a third-place finish in the 1970 long jump. A three-year letterwinner in football, he led the 1971 squad in pass receptions.
