The longest serving and second-winningest men’s basketball coach in NDSU history, Bentson coached the Bison cagers for 16 seasons, compiling 170 wins and two North Central Conference championships from 1949-1965. The Bison won the outright league title in 1952 and shared the crown in 1954. He coached 19 All-NCC players during his tenure, including first-team All-America guard Marv Bachmeier. He moved into the counseling and guidance field at NDSU following the 1965 season and was named the Dean for Men in 1967. He became the Associate Dean of Student Affairs at NDSU in 1975. When he retired in 1981, he had put 32 years of service. Sons Mike and Greg played football at NDSU and Mike, a quarterback, made the Bison Hall of Fame.
