MOSCOW, Idaho—The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its final regional rankings this week. The 2016 Big Sky champion Vandals were ranked 10th in the Mountain Region. 2016 Big Sky MVP, Marianna Petrei was seeded 18th.

“It is very rewarding and deserving to see our team represented in both the team and singles rankings,” head coach
Mariana Cobra said. “This just shows that what we have built here at Idaho is getting noticed for all the right reasons. We put a lot of work in to establish ourselves. We are going to continue to grow and build a bright future for our program.”

Idaho defeated Northern Arizona in the Big Sky Tournament to claim its second straight Big Sky championship. The Vandals advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season, having won the Western Athletic Conference two years prior. Idaho finished with a 19-9 overall record, having its season come to a close against No. 8 Pepperdine.

Petrei, a freshman from Udine, Italy, led the league with a 22-3 overall singles record along with a perfect 11-0 mark during conference play. Playing exclusively at No. 1 singles, Petrei put together two separate 11-match winning streaks and dropped just six sets prior to the NCAA Tournament. Her .880 winning percentage set an Idaho single-season record.

Petrei's spectacular rookie season earned her a spot at the 2016 Oracle/ITA Masters, which will take place Oct. 13-16 in Malibu, Calif. The national tournament will consist of a double elimination 32-player men's singles draw, a double elimination 32-player women's singles draw, and a single elimination 32-team mixed doubles draw. Each mixed doubles team will be comprised of the men's player and women's player from each conference, with wild card players paired together or with conference players who do not have a counterpart.
